The year 2012 on the Western calendar is also Jin-shin, the 29th year of the 60th sixty year cycle in the Chinese traditional calendar. In honor of this event, Platinum Pens is producing a special limited edition fountain pen, Maki-e Black Dragon in the Dark. Produced in just 150 numbered pieces worldwide, the pen features a striking image of a dragon rising into the sky, achieved via hand-painted Maki-e technique and utilizing Wajima Black Lacquer Urushi. Jin-shin is a year with special connotations in the Chinese calendar. Platinum Pens marks this special anniversary, which occurs just once every sixty years, with a very special fountain pen. The Chinese character, connected to the Chinese character, means a birth of life. From ancient times in China, the number nine is thought of as very important and special, in part because of its closeness to the number 10, which considered best. The nine is used sometimes in China, for example there is the Kowloon Area in Hong Kong City, which means Beyond the Sky or End of the sky, and very famous word, which means king or power itself. In honor of this anniversary year, which comes just once every sixty years, Platinum Pen is producing a limited number in just 150 pieces of the Jin-shin Black Dragon in the Dark fountain pen. We are about to launch the newest model in the popular 3776 series - the CENTURY fountain pen will be appearing this September. But prior to that, we will be introducing the limited edition MOTOSU transparent demonstrator pen.

In homage to the current year, it will be released worldwide on July 1st in an edition of just 2011 pieces, with the serial number on the pen’s cap. Lake Motosu is one of five major lakes surrounding Mt. Fuji. And as Lake Motosu is renowned for its clear transparent waters, we at Platinum thought this an appropriate name for this release.


The CENTURY, the newest model in the 3776 series, is designed to create beautiful calligraphy in Japanese letters. Also new in this model is the high performance “slip and seal” structure in the pen’s cap, meant to protect against leaks caused by changes in atmospheric pressure.




SLIP & SEAL MECHANISM
It has normally been thought difficult to make an airtight pen with a screw-type cap. If not sealed tightly, the following problems can result:

1. Ink drying out due to moisture evaporation.
2. Problems with dried ink if the pen is not used for three to six months.
3. It can be necessary to clean the pen using our Ink Cleaner Kit or even to repair or replace the nib itself if the damage due to dried ink is too severe.

At the request of customers, we at Platinum Pen Company have gone back to the basics to deal with this problem. This is the first fountain pen which has our unique “Slip & Seal” structure in a pen with a screw-type cap. Thanks to this innovation, currently being patented, it is possible to have a screw-type cap with complete airtightness.

Platinum celluloid manufacturing method is not a layered style. A board of celluloid is sliced to a thickness of 2mm and is then pressed into the barrel and cap molds. This technique can best enhance beautiful patterns of celluloid evenly throughout the cap and barrel. It also enhances the deep blue celluloid color.

The octagonal shape of the fountain pen is further finished by hand.

Do to the shading of the blue celluloid; you can see the change from the medium/dark blue to the deep shade that appears as the ocean at midnight on a clear evening.

Celluloid is a traditional material for pen making, one that offers unparalleled depth, feel, and color.  Celluloid is a very difficult material to use, requiring an exacting process to create, followed by an extended curing process to ensure the stability of the material. Our rich celluloid is prepared to our specifications and carefully cured to ensure a perfect material for our pens.
