Why is it
called "Noodler's"? "Noodler's Ink", with the lowest
cost per volume in stores that carry it and 100% made in the USA from
cap to glass to ink. The ink with the catfish on the label - symbolizing
a southern sport that attempts to equalize the struggle between man and
animal in the quest for a sense of fair play...and thus a fair price. Safety and
feathering resistant ink was a priority voiced by several pen collectors
- and many wanted a more traditional ink that more closely followed the
traditions of 1950's Skrip and Quink. Thus an ink one can use on the newspaper
crossword puzzle, most recycled smooth papers, and even card board and
industrial brown paper, rice paper and tissue thin papers from the far
east. Feathering has been virtually eliminated (unless you use paper towel
type material!) - yet the ink is still extremely safe when in contact
with vintage pens - safer still than the quick dry formula and more similar
to 1950's Skrip for such factors. However, several of the brighter colors
were lost in the transition - yet other colors were gained. "Quick dry" ink was called by some as "revolutionary" - but it does not behave itself on cotton fiber and some of the higher recycled content papers. Noodler's ink must be capable of doodling ideas and concepts in as many places and forms as is possible for a fountain pen ink - the greater the utility to the user - the better. The benefit of quick dry was intended for left handed writers - as no matter how fast you write and press the freshly written word - it won't smudge...even if it hit the page a fraction of a second earlier. It truly hates recycled papers.

![]() Eternal Polar Brown - 3 Oz. Polar Brown is one of the most durable fountain pen inks that Noodler's makes - once dried upon cellulose paper it exhibits that sought after resistance to bleaches and the chemical tools of the forger as well as UV light resistance and pH neutrality. The color is a fiery brown with hints of Dante within the halo of the line - which explodes upon the page if one makes a sample line upon a wet paper towel to see this effect more clearly. The bottle can be left in the mailbox on cold mornings without fear of the contents freezing solid and bursting the glass. One of several unusual traits of this ink is to occasionally render coated glass (even a fingerprint inside a bottle) the appearance of a photographic negative until washed away with tap water. This illusion has not been found to serve any purpose yet - but if you find your bottle exhibiting this behavior and know of a purpose hopefully you can let other Noodler's users know? ;-) Noodler's has made other "fiery halo" eternal brown inks, yet this is the first to have such highlights with bleach resistance (others either turn darker in response to bleach exposure - or experience a radiance of colors as the halo expands beyond the confines of the line). Another odd trait is that the components of the ink include a brilliant red-orange "de-facto" prime (does not reduce to conventional prime colors and indeed behaves as a prime itself) which when combined with the other components forms a bi-gravity ink. In certain circumstances this fiery red-orange will show itself apart from the other components. It quickly hides itself back into the ink with movement and sometimes temperature changes, but now and then in testing the unusual would happen: a striped line (both horizontal and vertical bands, depending upon the vagaries of the nib/feed delivery and grade of paper). We have tried many times to produce this kind of ink reliably (for standard/readily available non-magnetic tipped fountain pens) in greater quantities than just one to three bottles....but have not yet reached that point. This ink does exhibit the behavior under the right circumstances, however....though not consistently. As with our quest for a white fountain pen ink - one day, if it can be done in ink....it will be done here at Noodler's (assuming the founder is still alive and kicking by that time!). As with other eternal inks, it is best NOT to mix it with non-pH neutral inks of any kind....and to avoid inks with any salt content (such as metallic salt based inks). Though durable once dried upon cellulose paper - it is fragile while aqueous (it resists the sun when dried on paper, yet NOT when aqueous in the bottle!) and is also quite vulnerable while aqueous to inks with extremes of pH, divergent dye families & high detergent levels. A pen should thus be rinsed first with a mild solution of household ammonia and cold to room temperature tap water before filling and as needed thereafter (NEVER hot! Hot water can fade ebonite and certain plastics. Also use tap water alone if no ammonia is available.). The tines of the nib should be open sufficiently for a ray of light to clearly pass through them - any tighter and flow will be restricted (this is not a conventional ink nor is it your typical modern ink filled with detergents...detergents would counteract the effects of lubrication and tend to remove lubricants from pen seals - thus they are not used). MSRP $12.50, SKU #19209 ![]() Bulletproof Lexington Gray Finally! The Gray that you have been asking for.

At the end of World War II a colonial style blue ink was made in Boston, Massachusetts. Similar to a cobalt blue - though not an acid ink, it replicated blue ink from a much earlier era. There is a bottle in the Noodler's collection of vintage inks - and the color is extremely intense. "Baystate Blue" is Noodler's conventional (waterproof) version of the classic colonial era blue based upon how the original formulas behave upon the page and taking into account the later 1940s version color intensity....but avoiding the acidity of the earlier inks through the use of different/modern components. The label depicts two giant catfish spitting ink upon the golden dome of the Massachusetts state capitol - I leave the meaning of the art work to free interpretation (once upon a time there was a little tea party....). This ink is unique and has a different pH than other Noodler's Inks - being slightly more alkaline as indicated on the label. If you mix this ink - be careful to only mix small amounts to see how the ink behaves with other inks. That way, little will be wasted if the mix does not turn out to be as pleasing as might be hoped. This ink was not made with mixing in mind - in fact, sometime in the future a few more inks will be introduced that are compatible with this particular family of inks for mixing purposes. The penetration rate and dry time are classic - though should not require the use of blotting paper and pounce powders unless one requires instant dry times. It is hoped that when you place the pen to the page - this color jumps out before your eyes with that vibrancy of the rebellious inks mad King George so vehemently disliked! Baystate Blue is waterproof when dry. MSRP #12.50/3 oz. Bottle ~~~~ SKU # 19048
The reintroduction of a rare (and as of recently unavailable) mid-1940s family of inks that was once very popular in the New England area has been well received by enough pen users to warrant the expansion of these inks. Despite the highly unusual nature of this ink family (particularly when Baystate Blue is compared to far weaker nondurable modern inks) many Noodler's customers have requested that it be expanded beyond "Baystate Blue". The following two colors can be mixed with Baystate Blue and share some of its contrast and intensity - though do not share all of its properties (Cranberry is not waterproof, and Grape is only partially water resistant - both can be removed with bleach from paper). They have more variable pH levels - and when mixed the pH can and will migrate. They should not be mixed with with any other inks EXCEPT those with the "Baystate" label. They are "exclusive to themselves" in behavior as an ink family and can be destroyed if mixed with certain iron derived European inks. This unusual ink is the result of a long quest for a replica color to 1970s era mercurochrome antiseptic, which was famous for its distinctively bright orange/pink/red fire like tones. An artist testing the ink discovered that when used with a brush, the heavier applications of the ink would dry to develop into sepia shaded highlights within the brush strokes of the fire like color shades. No other carmine ink has been found to have this feature ...and any unique ink deserves to be among our palette of inks based upon the hope somebody might gain pleasure through its use!
Sold only in 4.5 oz bottles, is a combination ink that absorbs as much of the color spectrum as could be engineered, with an average penetration rate when humidity levels are less than 60% and given the average paper grade (the less costly legal pads and basic copy and writing papers...rule of thumb: the greater the recycled content, the faster the dry time/penetration rate). All the previously mentioned black inks are “bulletproof", though standard black has been subject to the most extensive testing as it was our very first ink.
The label has no name, just the image of the "anti-feather". This ink was formulated in a small quantity for those who care less about dry times (it is not a fast penetration ink and will take more time to dry) and care most about feather resistance on high recycled content papers and Moleskin papers that are particularly absorbent and porous. X-Feather Black exhibits the slowest dry time and the most limited penetration rate of any Noodler's black inks. This bright fire engine red ink spoofs former Russian Premier Nikita Kruschev - definitely a collectible label! If you want your writing to stand out, this does the trick with it's bright color. It is a very true red, no orange, no pink involved.
Borealis BlackThe label artwork depicts the Northern Lights in all their colorful glory because the ink absorbs their full spectrum. This is a conventional black ink from the 1950s, super smooth writing, shades well, and perfect for artists and calligraphers with fast flex pen work to do. It is water resistant on most paper grades - HOWEVER, unlike other grades of Noodler's Black (Standard Black, Polar Black, Heart of Darkness, and "X-Feather") Borealis is NOT a bulletproof black. What does that mean? This ink CAN be removed by several laundry detergents and carpet cleaners. It vanishes before bleaches. It is not considered fraud resistant (though still far safer than most ball point pens!). It is not resistant to heavy UV light exposure. It is simply a super smooth writing conventional black ink that still has the value added content of the 1950s which have been lost in many modern conventional inks. In the 1950s people EXPECTED their fountain pen ink to survive a trip to the mailbox during a rainy day! This ink offers those of you who might not want your grandkids to see everything you write - or who may have a desire for an older era's ink technology - yet do want the ink to survive a decent amount of time (though not perhaps as long as the paper exists, as bulletproof inks tend to do) as well as a few rain storms or water spills.... another more durable option for an intense deep black line from Noodler's Inks. The Blackest of the conventional Blacks!! Borealis is pH neutral. MSRP $12.50/3 oz. Bottle, SKU #19051
Noodler's received numerous requests for a "Periwinkle" eternal ink over the past few years. There were several prototypes sent to a handful of retailers - and it was frustrating to see how many divergent views exist of what a "periwinkle" color truly is.... Of course, I always thought of "periwinkle" as being the color of the blue curve of a periwinkle snail's shell - being in New England. Alas - some think of the flower, others a 1960s crayon color, and still others believe it should copy some other company's ink color. I followed the snail and made it a periwinkle shade of blue - and it also fluoresces an interesting blackberry cream purple when exposed to a fluorescent black light. It is an extremely durable ink - don't let that delicate pastel shade fool you.....it will hold its own against the tools of the forger, UV light, water, detergents, etc....just permit it to dry upon cellulose paper. It might not be possible to sit and wait to prove that it remains on that page long after the faded ball pen and conventional inks...long after the iron gall inks have burned holes in the page....long after humidity has removed and/or dispersed the diluted weaker inks.....however, though I don't have that 100 years of time to prove it will last - everything possible has been done in its manufacture to make it last as long as is conceivably possible to have a fountain pen ink last upon the page! MSRP $13.50 per 1 oz. bottle, SKU # 19184
